Described by the Lord Chamberlain as a ‘farcical comedy’, this is classic Coward wit.
Best friends Jane and Julia wave their husbands off for a weekend of golf, then have to decide – should they, or shouldn’t they, meet up with Maurice, an old flame of both of theirs just arrived in town from France? Illicit passion or respectable domesticity? While pondering, they get riotously tipsy: old rivalries resurface, and their friendship, and their marriages, are sorely tested.
FALLEN ANGELS premiered at the Globe Theatre, London (now the Gielgud Theatre) on 21 April 1925. The original cast featured Gerald Ames, Tallulah Bankhead, Edna Best, Mona Harrison, Austin Trevor and Arthur Wellesley. On 1 December 1927, the play had its Broadway premiere at the 49th Street Theatre.
Noël Coward was born in 1899 and made his professional stage debut as Prince Mussel in The Goldfish at the age of 12, leading to many child actor appearances.
