“Last night I went to Manderley again” opens both a great novel (with a special place in south-west hearts) and a great film (Hitch’s Hollywood debut). Fontaine is the mousey second wife of Maxim de Winter, forever in the shadows of the first – especially where Mrs Danvers, the housekeeper, is concerned. Rebecca won an Academy Award for Best Film; amazingly, Hitchcock never won Best Director.
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
With Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, George Sanders, Judith Anderson
