Pygmalion, by George Bernard Shaw
The inspiration for the later musical, My Fair Lady, and its own origins drawing on a Greek myth (a sculptor who fell in love with one of his statues), this is probably one of Shaw’s most famous works. Oddly, it premiered in 1913 in Austria and then New York in a German translation before finally arriving in London in the English version, complete with the strangely spelt phonetic ‘cockney’ of Eliza Doolittle.
A Message from the organiser Chris Gill
We have established a tradition of reading a play once a month at the Marine Theatre, which is kindly providing the venue free to support community drama. We have a small group of regular attenders and we are always pleased to welcome new people, whether they want to read or just listen. The selection for July to September is varied and exciting as usual and driven by the suggestions of our regular attendees. If you want to go on our circulation list or have any questions about the meetings, please contact Chris Gill through the Marine Theatre.
Please note the readings are not always on the same day of the week and are not always equally spaced out.
Please remember to bring with you a paper or screen copy of the script if you wish to read. We are not able to provide copies.
