A heady brew of foot-stomping blues and classic Americana, all performed in Back To The Shack's own distinct style. With Julian Phillips on vocals and accordion, Izi Onslow on vocals and percussion, and Axel Keim on guitar and harmonica, they have established themselves as one of the most entertaining bands on the scene.

Julian Phillips taught himself how to play boogie woogie aged fourteen by listening to and interpreting the music of Jimmy Yancey, Leroy Carr and Clarence “Pinetop” Smith. Julian is well known for playing the accordion, an instrument that blends seamlessly with the swing and rhythm of the music. He has played in concerts and festivals in Europe and America, and his love and knowledge of the music is infectious.

Izi Onslow is a classically trained singer who has been performing boogie and blues for many years, playing with some of the top musicians on the international blues scene including Big John Carter, Carl ‘Sonny’ Leyland and Jo Schumacher. Drawing influences from a broad range of artists from Memphis Minnie to Big Mama Thornton, she has developed a style that is entirely her own.

Guitarist Axel Keim spent his childhood in Detroit, Michigan, and moved to Germany in the early seventies, where he started performing in the blues venues. He then travelled to UK in the late seventies where he began to play more seriously, and stayed for the duration. He reflects on this musical genre: ‘I now play for my own amazement.’

Together these three musicians create a performance which has toe-tapping audiences enthralled, ranging from traditional old-style instrumental classics through to haunting melodic blues ballads, all infused with zest and enthusiasm for the best in Boogie and Blues.

“Great sound, great feel, authentic, real. Reminded me of the early Sun Studio sessions. Terrific!”
