Harriet has appeared in some of the most well-loved television series of recent years, including portraying ‘Margaret Thatcher’ in Channel 4’s drama ‘Brian and Maggie’ opposite Steve Coogan, ‘Black Mirror’, the role of ‘Lady Caroline Collingwood’ in HBO’s ‘Succession’, for which she received a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress and an Emmy nomination for Guest Actress in a Drama Series, and ‘Deborah Welton’ in Apple TV+’s ‘Ted Lasso’, earning an Emmy nomination for Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Additional television credits include, ‘The Crown’, ‘Downtown Abbey’, and ‘Killing Eve’, to name just a few.
In film, Harriet has appeared in ‘Shelter’, ‘The Last Duel’, ‘Atonement’, ‘Babel’, ‘The Young Victoria’, ‘Rocketman’, ‘Denial’, ‘The Sense of an Ending’, ‘My Dinner With Hervé, ‘Your Christmas or Mine?, and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.
Her extensive theatre career includes numerous productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company, including ‘Macbeth’, ‘Death of a Salesman’, ‘Anthony and Cleopatra’, and ‘Much Ado About Nothing’. She starred in the Donmar Warehouse’s all-female productions of ‘The Tempest’, ‘Henry IV’, and ‘Julius Caeser’, and starred in Alice Birch’s radical adaptation of Lorca’s masterpiece, ‘The House Of Bernarda Alba’ directed by Rebecca Frecknall. Most recently, Harriet collaborated with Ralph Fiennes on a production of ‘As You Like It’ at the Theatre Royal Bath.
Harriet has also had a distinguished literary career. Her most recent book, ‘She Speaks: What Shakespeare’s Women Might Have Said’, is an inventive reimagining written in Shakespearean verse and prose, giving voice to Shakespeare’s female characters.
Harriet holds an honorary degree from the Shakespeare Institute at the University of Birmingham in Stratford-upon-Avon.
She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2000 and, in 2011, was additionally appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).
