The day before Edwina Black’s funeral, Inspector Martin calls to interview her husband Gregory, her companion Elizabeth, and her housekeeper, Ellen. Gregory has long endured the domination of his wealthy wife, but is in love with Elizabeth. Edwina’s death gives them freedom, but at what cost? Does Edwina still haunt the house? Did she die of natural causes? Everyone has a secret to hide – can Inspector Martin find out exactly how Edwina met her end?

This play is a suspenseful, character-driven drama which was so popular that several versions have been created. First performed on the stage in 1949, it was adapted for live television later that year, and adapted for radio the following year. In 1951 it was made into film which was released in the USA as Obsessed, and in 1964 an Australian television version was broadcast.

As well as several plays, William Dinner and William Morum also wrote fiction together,
under the pseudonym Surrey Smith.
