Based on the story of 17th century social reformer Gerrard Winstanley, this 1975 film explores his leadership of a movement known as the ‘Diggers,’ who tried to establish a self-sufficient farming community on common land at St. George’s Hill near Surrey. Their efforts became known as one of the world’s first small-scale experiments in socialism.
