MUSIC | JAZZ IN THE BAR: TERRY QUINNEY PLAYS STAN GETZ | SUNDAY 24 MARCH

This concert is dedicated to the music of multi-Grammy winning Stan Getz, who played with the biggies – Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and Gerry Mulligan.

American jazz saxophonist Stan Getz was known as “the Sound” because of his warm, lyrical tone, his prime influence being the wispy, mellow timbre of his idol, Lester Young. Getz won many Grammy awards in his lifetime, including one for his performance of bossa nova hit Desafinado, which is one of the tunes you will hear tonight. A giant of the jazz world, Getz played with the best of his generation, and this evening you will hear music he played with the likes of Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and Gerry Mulligan.

Saxophonist and composer Terry Quinney has quickly established himself on the British jazz scene since arriving here a few years ago from Canada, As co-leader of the ‘The Sound Of Blue Note’ band he has performed with UK jazz icons such as Nigel Price, Ian Shaw, Alan Barnes and Gilad Atzmon. Terry has played at the renowned Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho, the National Theatre, Johnny Dankworth’s venue the Stables, and numerous jazz clubs in the UK-as has Philip Clouts, who will be accompanying him at the piano.

MUSIC | JAZZ IN THE BAR: CELEBRATING MILES DAVIS | SUNDAY 28 APRIL

Miles Davis was an American jazz trumpeter who became one of the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz. Pioneering the bebop style alongside Charlie Parker, Davis went on to record the seminal album ‘Kind of Blue’ and continued being an artistic innovator throughout his life.

Sam Massey will be performing pieces such as All Blues composed by Miles Davis, and those associated with Davis like Stella by Starlight. Massey has been hailed as a “fine trumpet player” by the Guardian and he will also be playing flugelhorn to add a contrasting mellow timbre for some of the tunes. He is accompanied by Philip Clouts at the piano.

Sam has performed alongside top-class musicians from across the UK, including the legendary Devon based bandleader Mike Westbrook and BBC Radio 2 favourite Clare Teal. As a performer, arranger and composer, he and his music have been broadcast on numerous BBC and Jazz FM  programmes. He is found on albums by PP Arnold and The Simmertones.

Sam has performed to sell-out crowds at The Welsh Millennium Centre, Kings Place Hall One, and St Ives Jazz Club.

Jazz giant Miles Davis was at the forefront of many key developments in the history of jazz. His best known albums include Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue, Porgy and Bess and In a Silent Way, and continue to have a lasting impact on musicians and listeners to this day. Davis had a virtuosic trumpet style which could also be very sparse, making every note count.
