MUSIC: Jazz in the Bar ~ Township Jazz with Neil Maya | Sunday 25 February – SOLD OUT

Acclaimed jazz pianist Philip Clouts continues his intimate series of shows in our cosy bar.

Neil maya

Saxophonist Neil Maya and pianist Philip Clouts have assembled a set which features music from the greats of South Africa including Abdullah Ibrahim, Miriam Makeba, and Hugh Masakela.

Philip Clouts was born in Cape Town and has loved South African jazz from childhood. The music has influenced his own playing and composing in the worldbeat group Zubop, and more recently in the Philip Clouts Quartet. “It’s a great pleasure to revisit some of my original sources of inspiration for this evening” says Clouts. “We’ll be playing pieces that connect directly to the audience – they are very melodic, with catchy rhythms”

“Emotionally-felt, highly listenable melodies and improvisations which colourfully lift the spirits” Adrian Pallant

MUSIC: Jazz Jurassica | Jazz Supper with Duncan Anselm Quartet with Nigel Price| Saturday 10 March

Bandleader and alto saxophonist, Duncan Anselm, recreates the Blue Note era with swinging American standards, alongside his own compositions. This is up-tempo cool jazz with lively solos at their best. For this special show, they’ll be joined by special guest, Nigel Price, one of the most gifted guitarists playing on the UK jazz scene. It promises to be a suitable finale to Jazz Jurassica’s second season.

Nigel Price

Nigel Price

Duncan’s band plays hard grooving tunes penned by the likes of Hank Mobley, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Clark.

Award winning jazz guitarist Nigel Price started his career in his early 20s, touring with various reggae and funk bands before settling on a solo guitar career and turning his attention to jazz. Citing early influences as Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Nigel honed his craft by attending gigs and sitting in with the players of the time.

He spent ten years with acid jazz outfit The Filthy Six, was a member of James Taylor’s band for 3 years and performed with David Axelrod.

He has picked up a Parliamentary Jazz Award (Best Jazz Ensemble, 2010), a nomination for a British Jazz Award (Best Guitarist, 2014) and a British Jazz Award (Best Guitarist, 2016) along the way.

They are brought to life with a wonderful local cast, courtesy of the Marine Players. The chocolate obsessed Vicar, the dim but charming Alice Tinker, her love Hugo, and his disapproving father will all make an appearance in this hilarious adaptation of the TV classic.

The Marine Players is a talented local drama group based in Lyme Regis. Formerly the Lyme Regis Dramatic Society, the Marine Players were formed at the beginning of 2016 in order to move to a closer relationship with the Theatre, and attract a younger and more wide-ranging membership.

In exchange for free use of the theatre, profits from productions go towards the upkeep of the theatre. So far the players have contributed towards productions such as The Tempest of Lyme, Around the World in 80 Minutes, and Monmouth.

The original TV series was produced by Tiger Aspect, with script by Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer, and has been adapted by Ian Gower and Paul Carpenter.
