MUSIC | CHILDREN LOVE DISCO | SUNDAY 28 OCTOBER

This is a Half-Term Halloween Special of our hugely popular daytime party for parents and their children

Children (0-10 yrs) and their families can hit the dance floor for an all ages party. With a real DJ spinning records with floorfillers from the 70s to present day, this young people’s ‘club night’ is very different to a normal ‘children’s party’, with halloween face painting, mask-making, and ghoulish decorations to take home after the party.

There is a spooktacular halloween-theme fancy dress theme.

It’s win-win, with a safe environment for the children to have a great time, whilst adults socialise and have a drink.

Children must be accompanied.

£3 children / £2 adults advance and on the door. 10% off for Theatre Friends.

MUSIC | SUNDAY SESSIONS | SUNDAY 28 OCTOBER

A post-roast music session featuring the guitarist from the Pretenders and Paul McCartney’s band

This is a relaxed Sunday afternoon event with the best in local musical talent, hosted by a headline act. This edition sees Robbie McIntosh playing a special set with Steve Wilson and Jess Upton.

Jess, Robbie and Steve will be performing some of their collective favourite songs in the intimate environs of  the Marine. Exquisite harmonies, floor-lifting guitar breaks and a welcoming ambience of genuine community spirit: if there’s a lovelier way to herald the dimming of the days, we’ve yet to discover it.

Robbie McIntosh has quietly accumulated a CV which beggars belief, supplying his peerless guitar work for artistes including Tom Jones, Norah Jones and John Mayer.

Steve Wilson has become one of the most well-loved musicians in the South West as the bassist with The Little Green Men and The Guilty Pleasures, besides fronting his own band, Wilson.

Jess Upton has established a gilt-edged reputation with her renowned Soul Band, and a guilt-edged reputation with the hard-partying Guilty Pleasures.

Come down after your Sunday Lunch and enjoy a pint of local brew and read the papers while listening to some charming acts.

Want to play? Apply by email to lym.brian@me.com.

Free entry, no tickets (donations to musicians gratefully received).

Bar opens and starts at 5 P.M.

SCREENING | MET OPERA: LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST | MONDAY 29 OCTOBER

Puccini’s gunpowder western returns to the stage where it premiered under Arturo Toscanini.

Gold Rush, 1849. Bar owner Minnie looks after a crew of rough miners while fending off the unwanted attentions of the local sheriff. When a tall, mysterious stranger walks into the bar, it looks as if her life is about to change. But the newcomer is not what he seems, and Minnie gets drawn into deadly peril. Boasting gunfights, poker games, and stagecoach robbers, La Fanciulla del West combines the action of a great adventure with the emotional punch of Italian opera.

Soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek sings the role of the gunslinging heroine, alongside Jonas Kaufmann as the outlaw who steals her heart. Marco Armiliato conducts.

Alan Bennett’s celebrated new play is broadcast to the Marine direct from London’s Bridge Theatre

Alan Bennett’s sharp and hilarious new play is ‘just what the doctor ordered’ (Daily Telegraph). Filmed live at London’s Bridge Theatre during its limited run, don’t miss this ‘rousing chorus line for the NHS’ (Observer) in your local cinema.

A documentary crew, eager to capture its fight for survival, follows the daily struggle to find beds on the Dusty Springfield Geriatric Ward, and the triumphs of the old people’s choir.

COMEDY | RICHARD CARPENTER IS CLOSE TO YOU | FRIDAY 2 NOVEMBER

Matthew Floyd Jones in the sell-out hit parody of Richard Carpenter

In a world where rainy days and Mondays collide, one man’s solitary journey to find himself has only just begun…

The piano player from Frisky & Mannish plays the piano player from The Carpenters in a razor-sharp parody play about a life spent playing the piano.

Richard used to be on top of the world, to the left of (and slightly behind) Karen. Now he’s back with a vengeance, only to find out it’s not exactly yesterday once more anymore.

DISCLAIMER: This Award-Winning Fringe hit show is not endorsed by the real Richard Carpenter.

THEATRE | NOT: LADY CHATTERLEY’S LOVER | SATURDAY 3 NOVEMBER

A laughter-filled parody of the D.H. Lawrence novel

Lady Chatterley welcomes home her husband, Clifford, from a war that has left the world in tatters. With Clifford’s legs also in tatters, he arrives at Wragby Hall confined to a wheelchair and clutching his secret.

As the couple grow apart Constance falls into a passionate, sexual and curiously experimental affair with estate gamekeeper: Mellors.

There will be long contemplative looks into the middle distance, moments of touching drama, plenty of farce and a gentle stroke of innuendo.

THEATRE | WITHERING LOOKS | TUESDAY 6 NOVEMBER

Specially reworked for the 200th anniversary year of Emily’s birth, Britain’s favourite literary lunatics, are back with their cult Brontë spoof  ‘Withering Looks’

The classic comic duo, Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding, just couldn’t resist the urge to dust off their crinolines, wear flattering bonnets and sit at rained-lashed windows in a pale and decorative manner. Don’t miss the chance to share in the silliness too!

Withering Looks takes an “authentic” look at the lives and works of the Brontë sisters – well, two of them actually, Anne’s just popped out for a cup of sugar. Peopled with many of the characters we know and love, Maggie and Sue move effortlessly from frock to frock coat.

Withering Looks won a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award and the Critics’ award for Comedy at the Edinburgh Festival. LipService recently won the Stage Door Foundation award for Excellence.
