Set in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of Millie Dillmount from Kansas who comes to New York in search of a new life for herself. Her grand plan is to find a job as a secretary for a wealthy man and then marry him. However, her plan goes completely awry. The owner of her dingy hotel kidnaps young girls to sell to the Far East; her wealthy boss is slow in proposing marriage; and the man she actually falls in love with doesn’t have a dime to his name – or so he tells her. Filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment. From explosive tap numbers to a Fred and Ginger routine on a window ledge!

“Villainy and genius can never be compatible?“

The opera follows the apocryphal legend that Antonio Salieri poisoned his rival and fellow composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart out of jealousy over his talent. Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) used the short story Mozart and Salieri by Alexander Pushkin as libretto, which also inspired Peter Shaffer’s famous stage play and film Amadeus.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s rarely performed two-hander is a character study, it is a close-up of Salieri and his tormented mind. He’s not just the villain in this story, we see a generous man committed to the art who praises Mozart’s work, but is torn between admiration for his fellow composer and his own jealousy.

In a new English translation and staged by an award-winning team, this original and innovative production will captivate its audience, making us witnesses, if not conspirators, of Salieri’s plan to poison Mozart.

A night in Vienna

The second half of the evening will show a new programme “A Night in Vienna”, a Mozart Medley with arias and duets from Mozarts most-loved operas such as Don Giovanni, Cosi fan tutte and The Magic Flute.

Sung in English and accompanied by piano.

Age suitability: 12+

ALL ABOUT YOU presents:

My World Has Exploded A Little Bit

by Bella Heesom | Directed by Donnacadh O’Briain

Bella Heesom’s debut play is a true story, an old story. It is about loss and grief, but told in an exciting and new way. The storytelling dips between a farcical performance lecture, and Bella’s deeply personal story of love and loss.

Mixing tender intimacy and unflinching honesty with hard-hitting philosophy, clownish silliness and an enchanting live piano score, Bella takes the audience on a powerful emotional journey, shot through with black comedy.Expect to laugh and cry all at the same time!

Performed by Bella Heesom and Eva Alexander and directed by Donacadh O’Briain (who directed the Olivier-winning Rotterdam by Jon Brittain and Always Orange by Fraser Grace at the RSC), the show comes to The Marine Theatre as part of a national tour following a critically acclaimed run at Underbelly at the Edinburgh Fringe 2016 and a Highly Commended transfer to VAULT Festival 2017.

★★★★★ ‘We need more radical honesty and honest artistry of the kind that Bella Heesom offers. She has created something very powerful indeed.’ (EdinburghSpotlight)

‘It’s funny, it’s charming, it’s absurd, and it’s very poignant. Highly recommended.’
