MUSIC: Buster Shuffle | Friday 16 March

Cockney ska and pop, with an authentic rock and roll sound is served up by dancefloor favourites Buster Shuffle

Buster-Shuffle-Press-Shot

Their new album was mixed by Adele’s producer, Paul Epworth and Jamie Ellis (Florence & The Machine, The Rifles). Their effortless fusion of ska and indie pop (think Madness crossed with Blur) have secured them shows at every major UK festival including Bestival and Glastonbury. Buster Shuffle built their reputation touring the UK with The Holloways, The Wombats, Goldie Lookin’ Chain and Chas ‘n’ Dave, before signing to EMI. Uncut magazine gave debut album ‘Our Night Out’ four stars with airplay on BBC Radio and XFM (where frontman Jet Baker was a regular on Danny Wallace’s breakfast show). They have performed across Europe from Berlin to Vienna, and have supported Lee Scratch Perry, Frank Turner,  the Drop Kick Murphys and Madness

THEATRE: The Marine Players present The Vicar of Dibley | Wednesday 21 to Saturday 24 March

All the characters of the cherished comedy return to the stage in this community play.

stained glass image copy

They are brought to life with a wonderful local cast, courtesy of the Marine Players. The chocolate obsessed Vicar, the dim but charming Alice Tinker, her love Hugo, and his disapproving father will all make an appearance in this hilarious adaptation of the TV classic.

The Marine Players is a talented local drama group based in Lyme Regis. Formerly the Lyme Regis Dramatic Society, the Marine Players were formed at the beginning of 2016 in order to move to a closer relationship with the Theatre, and attract a younger and more wide-ranging membership.

In exchange for free use of the theatre, profits from productions go towards the upkeep of the theatre. So far the players have contributed towards productions such as The Tempest of Lyme, Around the World in 80 Minutes, and Monmouth.

The original TV series was produced by Tiger Aspect, with script by Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer, and has been adapted by Ian Gower and Paul Carpenter.

NT Live: Julius Caesar | Wednesday 28 March

Nicholas Hytner directs a new take on the Shakespeare classic.

Julius Caesar

Ben Whishaw (The Danish Girl, Skyfall, Hamlet) and Michelle Fairley (Fortitude, Game of Thrones) play Brutus and Cassius, David Calder (The Lost City of Z, The Hatton Garden Job) plays Caesar and David Morrissey (The Missing, Hangmen, The Walking Dead) is Mark Antony. Broadcast live from The Bridge Theatre, London.

Caesar returns in triumph to Rome and the people pour out of their homes to celebrate. Alarmed by the autocrat’s popularity, the educated élite conspire to bring him down. After his assassination, civil war erupts on the streets of the capital.

Nicholas Hytner’s production will thrust the audience into the street party that greets Caesar’s return, the congress that witnesses his murder, the rally that assembles for his funeral and the chaos that explodes in its wake.

CINEMA: Suffragette | Monday 2 April

Meryl Streep stars in this British drama, set in 1912 and 1913, that tells the story of the suffragette movement.

This is part of a series at the Marine that celebrates 100 years of votes for women. This is in advance of our talk ‘Diane Atkinson Rise Up Women! Lives of the Suffragettes’; Diane acted as a consultant on this film.

Suffragette

Suffragette charts early feminism, in particular the women who went underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the state. They were working women who had seen peaceful protest achieve very little.

Radicalised and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives.

Maud was one such foot soldier. The story of her fight for dignity is as gripping and visceral as any thriller, it is also heart-breaking and inspirational.

The film’s characters are laundry workers, Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan) and Violet Miller (Ann Marie Duff), shopkeeper Edith Ellyn (Helena Bonham Carter), Mrs Haughton (Romola Garai) and WSPU founder Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep).  The film includes the suffragettes’ husbands Mr Watts ( Ben Wishaw), Mr Ellyn (Finbar Lynch) and Mr Haughton (Somuel West).

LYME REGIS CHILDREN’S WEEK: Children’s Yoga (3-7 years) | Tuesday 3 April

Join Sarah Higgins on a yogi-adventure.

Woman teaching children (7-10) yoga

Weaving stories out of yoga poses, children will take an imaginary journey as fearsome warriors to the jungle by boat, over seas and up mountains. Children will find out what its like to be a tree, standing tall and rooted to the ground; they will flutter like a butterfly, hiss like a snake, roar like a lion.

Beginning yoga early encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that’s noncompetitive. As well as increasing strength, flexibility and coordination, yoga promotes concentration and a sense of calmness.

Sarah Higgins started teaching adults yoga 8 years ago. As a mother she is keen to share her love of yoga with children. Yoga with children is creative and noisy. Parents are welcome to come along and join in with your child.

It will be a truly fun 45 mins and a great adventure
