The story of a Great Lady is a great new show from the Watermill Theatre in Newbury. It follows two great successes, both also written by Ade Morris, that have packed the theatre on previous evenings . This new play is on for one night only, 26 May at 8pm, and tickets are going fast already. It’s a touching, hilarious and sassy look at life, death and love through the eyes of three women. Fran Lamb is a journalist on the Winkham Weekly Snooze, eccentric, close to retirement, recently bereaved, she starts a creative writing group - to try to do something more creative for a change. Joining the group are Annie Taylor, a put-upon housewife, and Penny Tew, a drama teacher at Winkham Comp., and the three of them decide to devise a performance, perhaps unwisely, about Boadicea. As they get to know each other, not always in perfect harmony, they discover much in common and many differences, but none could have suspected how greatly their lives would connect, or how profoundly they might change during the mad, sad, magic and comic creation of The Story of a Great Lady.
Caroline Franklin wrote in the Henley Standard, “Ade Morris has understood the way in which women who are good friends deal with problems together, and the fact that much of the play is gloriously funny makes the contrast with the darker times more poignant.”
Tickets are available from Lyme Tourist information office at £9.00 for adults and £6.00 for under 16s.
