“There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.” Oscar Wilde from “A Picture of Dorian Gray”. Oscar Wilde’s inventive humorous tone embraces an ironic view of human kind. An evening spent in his company is never an evening misspent.  The Marine Theatre is delighted to welcome the return of the enormously popular  European Arts Company with this highly physical and hugely inventive production of “The Picture of Dorian Grey” The play starts at 8.00pm on Saturday 26th January and tickets are available from Lyme TIC 01297 442138.

Adapted from the novel by Oscar Wilde (and fresh from a successful European tour) this show will re-open the theatre after a dark period of three weeks. The theatre volunteers have been busy with paintbrushes and sewing kits, making good the ravages of time and the winter weather.  A versatile cast of 5 actors tell the wicked story of Dorian Gray using only the objects found within an artist’s studio. Therefore picture frames, paint pots, brushes, dust sheets, stepladders, trestles (and anything else that comes to hand) are used to create the physical world of Victorian London with great ingenuity and a lot of fun. As the theatre will only just have been cleared of these very props the theatre team is particularly looking forward to this creative production. “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars” is for Oscar’s most famous quotes. Knowing how the great artist ended his life makes this particular production an especially poignant evening, with much to reflect upon in consideration of a man’s aims and vision.
