THE BALD PRIMA DONNA BREAKS RECORDS! 17.04.07 | ||||||||||
|
The play “The Bald Prima Donna” broke all records this year, having been performed every night except Sundays, in a Paris theatre for 50 years continuously! "A big success in a small theatre is better than a small success in a big theatre and much, much better than a small success in a small theatre," said the playwright Eugene Ionesco on the extraordinary success of his play .“ David Lockwood is producing this new version of the “absurd” classic. He has previously acted at the Marine theatre having been a student with Cygnet and was in Dorset Corset’s production of “Persuasion” last year. He said “I love Lyme Regis and I’m very happy to bring my first professional show to this lovely theatre, and I believe they give you biscuits!” He added with a smile! Sebastian Pope, another member of the cast, tall and darkly good looking added, “The literary reputation of Lyme Regis makes it a daunting place to bring our production and we’ll be so interested to talk to the audience after the show. We have found while working on the script that the influence of Ionesco continues into the contemporary comedy scene of League of Gentleman and Green Wing , having been adopted and transformed by Pinter, Becket , and of, Monty Pythons Flying Circus”, he added with a dramatic flourish. Eugene Ionesco’s warped and dizzy leaps of logic helped to define the theatre of the absurd and are a thrilling challenge to any emergent company and this production achieves a livewire piece of surrealism. When Mr. and Mrs. Martin visit the Very English Mr. and Mrs. Smith in their Very English home in the suburbs of London not all is as it seems. Throw in a maid and the Captain of the Fire Brigade and absurdity ensues in Ionesco’s pseudo-play. As any fan of Cygnet theatre will tell you the Marine theatre is always transformed by their company and this new production company is planning to follow the tradition, bring us theatre nearly in the round, with an energy and immediacy that is refreshing. Tickets are £7.00 for adults and £5.00 for U 16s from Lyme TIC 01297 442138. The play will be followed by a discussion in the theatre bar with the company.
This Particular Theatre Company was formed by some people at some point in time. The Bald Prima Donna may be their first production. |
