Everyone has an innate love of stories. Stories create magic and a sense of wonder at the world. There is an exciting new world of storytellers out there, developing their storytelling skills and bringing old English tales to people who long for something more satisfying than an evening in front of the television. To celebrate our place as popular holiday destination the stories will be centered on the West Country and people will be encouraged to bring their own tales of holidaying in Lyme.

This complements the Lyme Regis Museum’s special Holidays exhibition. The museum is just next door to the Theatre and the holiday exhibition is already extremely popular. Featuring photographs and paintings as well as holiday tales, it is well worth a visit before or after our storytelling sessions. “The visitors to the Museum often stop and tell us their holiday tales on their way out,” smiled Pat Thompson, one of the regular volunteers at the Museum, “so I am sure these workshops will be popular; everyone has a tale to tell about a holiday incident, from a child getting lost for a heart stopping moment on the beach to sheltering from the rain, eating fish and chips while the band plays on!”

The Marine Theatre has asked David Heathfield, a very experienced story-teller, drama worker and  teacher to come to the Marine theatre to lead this day of storytelling workshops. He and Margie Barbour will also take time at lunchtime to tell stories in the friendly bar to anyone who fancies a sit down and a story. This session, at 1.00, called a Pie and a Pint and a Story is suitable for all ages and will have  a very relaxed drop in atmosphere. For only a £5.00 you can hear stories of the West Country from these master storytellers. They are both members of  the Society for Storytelling  and David  is the author of Spontaneous Speaking: Drama Activities for Confidence and Fluency.

The workshops, before and after this session, also for £5.00 each or £10.00 for the whole day, are to encourage everyone’s innate storytelling skills. If you have had an exciting event here in Lyme, come and tell us all about it, David will give gentle tips to help everyone have the confidence to share all or part of their story. Did you fall down the steps on the Cobb like Laura Musgrove? perhaps there’s a story as strong as “Persuasion” just waiting to come out of you so don’t be shy, come and join in. It’s suitable for all ages; grannies can bring their grandchildren or just come along and meet the friendly crowd.

Storytelling is as old as the hills, and the reason it has lasted is that we all love a good yarn.
