£12 Advance / £14 Door “Save the last dance for me?” growled the deep tones of Roy G Hemmings, one of the original Drifters. How could anyone resist. Roy G Hemmings and his Motown and Soul Show were a must booking for the Marine Theatre’s summer season. On Saturday 19 July the theatre will be vibrating to their wonderful songs “Up on the Roof” “Under the Boardwalk” and “Stand by Me”. An authentic and memorable journey through the motown years led by Roy G Hemmings, the longest serving member of the legendary group, The Drifters. In 1995 Roy performed as a member of The Drifters at The White House for the President Bill Clinton. The Dictionary of Soul line up consists of superbly talented musicians whose energy and spirit provide the uplifting, driving force behind Roy G Hemmings' lively vocals and blistering performance.
The evening will be a celebration of timeless songs performed with an energy and emotion that will touch the hearts of the audience taking them on a nostalgic journey of sweet soul music. This electrifying show pays tribute to an excellent era of magnificent soul and motown music featuring classic songs originally performed by Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Otis Redding, James Brown, Gladys Knight, The Drifters, The Four Tops and many more.
The Dictionary of Soul divas offer a perfect opening for this show adding a stunning dimension to the performance whilst contributing silky smooth harmonies and backing vocals. Each has a distinctive voice which blends perfectly, their energy and emotion are just the right ingredients to get the party started.
Roy G Hemmings is "one of the most talented and experienced soul singers working today" Roy has also enjoyed major success when he signed a recording deal in the mid 70's with the J.A.L.N. Band, one of the finest bands to storm the UK charts with an out 'n' out dance record. "Disco Music, I like it" produced by Pete Waterman. After three well-received albums, the group disbanded and Roy launched his successful solo career, playing some of the world's most prestigious venues.
In 1997, Roy released his solo album "No Afro, No Sequins, No Flares" to great critical acclaim. His second album "All Talked Out" followed in 1999 which included a fine version of The Drifters' classic "Like Sister and Brother".
