'FROM DONEGAN TO SPRINGSTEEN'
PAUL LEEGAN & THE LEGENDS
Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis
Friday 27 July at 8.30 (doors open 7.45pm)

Paul Leegan and the Legends will get the Marine Theatre Lyme Regis rocking on Friday 27 July at 8.30, doors opening at 7.45.  Jacky Clifford from Dorchester rang to book tickets immediately he saw Paul Leegan was playing here. “We saw him at the jazz club in Croydon”, he enthused, “it was really authentic, a great evening. Skiffle and rock and roll, he’s such a good musician and he makes great contact with the audience.”Paul Leegan and the Legends present a musical tribute to Lonnie Donegan and other more recent performers of the 'skiffle' and country blues music that Lonnie was first to popularise via 'Rock Island Line' and 'John Henry'. In the recent television programme on Skiffle Mark Lamarr revealed that skiffle is a direct ancestor of Rock and Roll, offering total communication between the band and their audience. Tickets are available from the Lyme TIC 01297 442138 at £10.00 in advance, £12.00 on the door.

One might be forgiven if mistaking Paul Leegan as being one of Lonnie Donegan's close relatives; such are the similarities in looks and voice. Lonnie himself remarked upon it during a friendship with Paul which was forged several years before 'The King Of Skiffle' passed away in 2002. More importantly it was very early in that friendship that Lonnie formally endorsed his support and agreement - and good wishes - to the Paul Leegan Legends performing and recording his music. They've been 'spreading the word' ever since and are making numerous return visits to venues all around the country.

Others have 'taken up' the cause, including Van Morrison with his 'Skiffle Sessions' album with Lonnie and, even more up to date, Bruce Springsteen with his Seeger Session Band CD, DVD and BBC concerts - this is all reflected in Paul Leegan's concert programme.

Their concert, 'Putting On The Style', is of course mainly a genuine tribute to the words and music of Lonnie Donegan and his numerous talents and styles. But it also commemorates many other great names of the 50's and 60's who have regularly born witness to the importance of Lonnie's influence in shaping THEIR careers. For example, close your eyes and you'd swear that the Legends young guitarist, Warren James, was Albert Lee, whilst the 'engine room' of the band is the well-travelled rock and bluesman Barry Meek on bass along with non other than drummer Harry Heppingstall who was with The Matadors in the 1960's.
