“Roy Bailey’s wonderful voice has a quality that transcends the venue, be it the Albert Hall or a festival tent. Hearing his voice harmonise as the audience joins in with one of his wonderful melodies, is a unifying and transporting experience”. enthused Margie Barbour, Artistic Director of the Marine Theatre. “This event on Saturday 19th April at 8.00 pm in the Marine Theatre  is a must see in any calendar!” Tickets from Lyme TIC 01297 442138 are going fast as the folk community realise that the Marine Theatre is regularly presenting leading folk performers; from BBC Folk award winner’s like Martin Simpson to exciting new talent like Beck Sian, Kate Bush’s Australian cousin. Roy Bailey and John Kirkpatrick are at the forefront of folk music and song in Britain. Their repertoire includes some of the most exciting folk music in Britain today; favourites like ”BeesWing” by Richard Thompson and local stories from the folk canon like “Captain Swing” from the Tolpuddle Folk Opera by Graham Moore. Their material also embraces wonderful songs written  by Si Khan and Leon Rosselson.

Roy Bailey has been hailed as representing "the very soul of folk's working class ideals... a triumphal homage to the grass roots folk scene as a radical alternative to the mainstream music industry."

(Colin Irwin, MOJO) He has been described in the GUARDIAN as being the possessor of one of the finest voices in the folk world and has a large, widespread and very loyal following worldwide.

In 2003, Roy together with Tony Benn were awarded 'Best Live Act' at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, for their hugely successful programme 'Writing on the Wall.' Roy has worked with many different people throughout his career and can count many well respected people, from all walks of life, among his enthusiastic supporters, among the most enthusiastic our own local folk icon, Billy Bragg, who wrote "...as powerful as anything I'd heard by THE CLASH - it was Roy's voice, the strength of it and the compassion in it" and Tony Benn said of him "...the greatest socialist folksinger of his generation." Roy was a member of The Three City Four in the mid sixties; worked with Stalking Horses (initiated with John Tams) and more recently formed the Band of Hope with John, Martin Carthy, Dave Swarbrick and Steafan Hannigan.

John Kirkpatrick is one of the most prolific figures on the English folk scene, performing solo, in duos, acoustic groups and electric bands, he has established an enviable reputation as an instrumental virtuoso and session musician, as well as a leading interpreter of English folk music. He has been a member of the Albion Country Band, Magic Lantern, The Richard Thompson Band, Umps and Dumps, Steeleye Span, Brass Monkey, Trans-Europe Diatonique, and Band of Hope, as well as numerous ceilidh bands.

Their respective careers place them as central figures in the folk scene for more than thirty years.  They both began their musical careers more than 40 years ago and have been collaborating for many years and the Marine Theatre is proud to welcome these two titans of the folk scene.
