EXERCISE FOR THE OVER 50s AND BALLROOM DANCING LESSONS 01.04.08

Emmy Sinnott, Outreach Worker

Emmy Sinnott hasn’t let the grass grow under her feet since she took up the post of Outreach Worker at the Marine Theatre. This POPP, Partnership for Older People Project, seeks to engage the grey panthers of our community in more activity. In the first instance, Emmy has organized exercise classes and ballroom dancing lessons for the over 50s. The local POPP Wayfinder, Dallas Reeves, explained “We all know we should be physically active: it can help you lose weight, get fitter, reduce your stress levels, it improves sleep patterns and increases your life quality and expectancy, and can reduce the risk of heart disease – who wouldn’t exercise if they could. Overall, it makes you feel refreshed and happy! They say everyone should participate in some form of exercise for 30 minutes 3 days a week, and now it’s become that bit easier here in Lyme to work it into your busy life style.”  To attract more people to the classes the Marine Theatre is offering the first class for free, and the classes will then cost £3 each session, and will include free refreshment.

Nicky Harwood, Over 50s Exercise Class

Nicky Harwood, runs her own fitness company called Gabriel Fitness, offering personal training, rehabilitaion from injury and illness and exercise classes for all abilities. She is coming over to lead the Fun and Fitness classes, starting on Wednesday 23rd April 2008 at 9.30 am for an hour. Nicky is well known in the local area and will shortly be seen as Ado Annie in “Oklahoma!” in the Lyme Regis Operatic Society’s new production. She is a well qualified teacher of activities for the older person and will ensure the class is run at a pace to suit all comers. She said “This will be a gentle session but everyone will be asked to fill in a little questionnaire before we start, so please call Emmy to register your interest and receive a form”. Emmy Sinnott works in the Marine Theatre office so do drop in to see her on Mondays or Wednesdays or call the office on 01297 442394 and give your details.

The theatre has been fortunate in finding Glenn Bayliss to lead the ballroom dancing classes, where he will teach Waltz, Tango, Quick Step and Rumba with his partner Veronica.  “I have been trying to learn ballroom dancing for years” laughed Margie Barbour the Artistic Director of the theatre “and recently I went to one of Glenn’s lessons and he really is a fantastic teacher. Good fun, really clear and took the class at a pace that meant we were all confident enough to try everything!”  Glenn’s lessons will also start on Wednesday 23 April, at 11.30 am, and will last an hour. Tthe sessions will last for 12 weeks and then start again in the autumn. Glenn is currently training with the Aird School of Dancing in Weymouth and runs several classes along the south coast. He has danced since he was 8 years old and has something of Anton Du Beck about him. Emmy Sinnott said “Everyone can have a go, we’ll all be in the same boat of learning something new and having fun at the same time!” she smiled “and exercise really does make you feel better”
