‘Luminous Wings & Unseen Things’

Ethereal, graceful and colourful, with her waist-length red hair and Celtic tatoos, Beck Siàn is a striking presence. The Marine Theatre Lyme Regis is the perfect setting for her magical concert. On Friday 30 May at 8.00 pm she will silence audiences with her vocal  agility and passion, She draws inspiration from the subtropical rainforests of her native Australia, creating what she fittingly calls ‘Haunted Forest Music’, through voice, guitar, whistle and didgeridoo. It’s mystical, magical music, spiritual and enchanting. There are touches redolent of Kate Bush, Beck’s cousin, but these are mere brush-strokes of influence. Overall, it’s as distinctive as it’s original. With a sopranovoice to die for, her approach is highly individual, the ambience emotional and utterly entrancing.Andrew Wilson (BBC Radio)  said of her “There is an enormous range of emotion and feeling in that

voice and persona: and, with that voice, she can do anything.”

Support from  Rosa Rebecka, whose gentle and intimate songs are alternated with traditional music; Swedish heartrending love songs and joyous polskas, her haunting voice a capella, accompanied by her guitar or soaring over the lingering note of the Tibetan singing bowl. She links the songs together through flute tunes and stories, adding yet another texture to the experience. An award-winning songwriter, she compliments her unique compositions with her emotive interpretations of traditional ballads.

Beck Siàn says “I have always been fascinated by ghost stories, and my interest in the paranormal was encouraged by my Irish nana, who told tales of spirits and leprechauns. I love traditional folk ballads that have a supernatural theme, and ghosts often pop up in my lyrics.” She  was born in Melbourne and lived in the middle of a forest-covered mountain range in Victoria, which influenced her stunning debut album, ‘Unfurling’. Now based in the United Kingdom, Beck Siàn has spent the past year travelling around Britain on her ‘Unfurling’ Tour, earning fantastic reviews along the way.

Step out of the ‘Haunted Forest’ and into an enchanted, secret garden, busy with the movement of ‘Luminous Wings & Unseen Things’...Currently in the recording studio, Beck Siàn plans to release 2 new albums in 2008 - one of them is to be called ‘Luminous Wings & Unseen Things’ and the New Year will see Beck embark on her new tour of the same name.

Once again Beck Siàn will be presenting a conceptual album of original songs, as well as artistic and emotional interpretations of traditional songs. ‘Unfurling’ had a green, misty quality of forests, ferns, damp moss and the tears of love, jealousy and betrayal. Beck Siàn referred to her atmospheric compositions as ‘Haunted Forest’ music.

“I have found that my music has moved out of the Australian forests, and into the formal garden of a stately home. Being based in the United Kingdom at the moment is definitely influencing my music, and I am reconnecting with the Celtic roots of my family.”
