LYME YOUTH ARTS 10th August
Waiting for the green light
A newly formed group calling themselves Lyme Youth Arts which is made up of adults and young people have their fingers crossed this month waiting to hear if they have been successful in their bid for lottery funding so that a series of Arts based innovative workshops for young people can go ahead in partnership with LymeArtsFest this September.
Lyme Youth Arts, with The Marine theatre, Woodroffe Arts department, Insparation and the Library Project sampled a group of 40 young people who filled out questionnaires, the response was 100% thumbs up.
If Lyme Youth Arts get the money they will employ Artists to work with 13-21 year olds starting early September, building towards a finale weekend of the 28th during Lyme Arts Fest week.
Fran Williams’s volunteer coordinator said “The aim is to provide young people with a platform so they can experiment with different Art forms and techniques resulting in a series of installations in public places in Lyme, involving sculpture, light and sound, it is an exciting project and we have our fingers crossed we can go full steam ahead as soon as we know ”.
Workshops will be at The Marine Theatre, Insparations, and weather permitting and with the Lyme Town councils blessing, the main focus of workshops and the finale will be in the seafront shelters and Marine Theatre Square.
Seven workshops are planned, three sculpture projects, including stone balancing, projection workshops where young people will be able to have actual work experience and see their works on big screens at the second Sweet FA production dance night at the Marine theatre on the 22nd Sept.
A Busking and skiffle band and beat boxers will work with young local musicians and young people who want to invent original sounds and make instruments, put it all together with some Big light installations and projections and it should all look pretty amazing.
The Natural Theatre Company have been provisionally booked and LYA are
Asking if anybody knows of some professional beat boxers to contact them.
On the last Sunday there will be a Big bake at the Town Mill Bakery, a chance for all young people and families [no age restrictions for this one] to get into that delicious smelling place, bake a piece of Art, and stick it all together for a Big picture.
WDDC Cultural Officer Jude Allen who has worked closely with Lyme Youth Arts say’s " Lyme Regis is home to a wealth of artistic talent. It is very encouraging to work with groups such as Lyme Youth Arts to nurture young talent in the hope that Lyme remains culturally rich in the future. The young peoples' workshop ideas are fantastic and will encourage this sector of the community to feel part of the ever-growing Lyme Regis ArtsFest. I hope their application to Awards for All is successful and that more young people will want to be involved in the future of youth arts activity in Lyme "
